What is political theatre?

What Is Political Theatre?

The internet definition of  Political Theatre is as follows:
"Political theatre" is a term that has been used to refer to three different things: Theatre that comments on political issues, political action or protest that has a theatrical quality to it, and any action by politicians that is intended to make a point rather than accomplish something substantive.

My Personal Definition:
Political Theatre is such a broad term that it is quite difficult to simply define, however if I was to I believe that political theatre that can be considered taboo and doesn't necessarily tell a story but instead sends a message to the audience. Its a piece of theatre made to leave an audience thinking and to leave them wondering about ideas on the piece that they just watched. Furthermore it should challenge and motivate the audience to really consider the society that they live in today.
It addresses subjects that are going on currently; the more unusual ones as well as the everyday recurring issues such as Racism, Police Brutality, Homophobia etc. And through political theatre we are able to confront the audience about their feelings toward  it as well as the government about our issues on current affairs. Political Theatre is an amazing way that people are able to send a message or discuss an issue freely without being stopped.

Examples of Political Theatre:
  • Flash Mob
  • Protests
  • Boycotting
